More difficult repairs will require a further quote.

Most B&W photos can be repaired a lot easier than colour photos. If you have a colour photo that needs to repaired, I would love to have a look. If I can do the repairs required, we can talk. If not, I will let you know.

I will need a digital scan of your photograph. The preferred digital factors are noted below. They will dictate how large you might be able to print the new photo. However, I will suggest that any planned printing of aged photographs should be restricted to the original size or close to it. If you try to print a 14” x 17” photo from an original that was 4” x 5” you will be gravely disappointed as it will likely be very blurry, with a lot of noise.

Not all photos can be completely repaired. For example, a fold line through a piece of clothing is quite easy to repair but if that fold line goes through a face it might not allow for a “perfect” repair. However, new updates in Photoshop include some Artificial Intelengence features, making it easier to get a good repair. I will always try to do my best.

Sometimes correcting colour casts works well but sometimes it is better to leave the colour as it was, particularly in aged photos, although adding a Sepia filter of various strengths might help. I can provide you with two or three copies of different filters once the corrections are complete.

Colourization of old photos can be more difficult and are not always successful, but the new A.I. If you have a photo that you would like colourized, I’d be happy to have a crack at it.

Many old photographs have the name and location of the photographer on the photo. Much can be done to clean up that area of the photo but if there is damage done to the text, it may not be possible to fix. We can also remove it if you want or possibly create new text that almost matches the old.

Things that can usually be repaired:

- Fold lines

- Contrast

- Colour correction

- Spot & Line removal

- Over or under exposure

- Lens flare reduction

- Horizon correction

- Resize to fit conventional sizes (not all photos can be cropped successfully)

- Sharpening of soft edges

- Background correction or reduction

- Over or Under Exposure correction

- Removing hand written notes

- Shadows can be lightened and blown out highlights can darkened down.

Things that can be difficult to repair:

- TEXT, removing, repairing or even replacing text.

- COLOUR PHOTOS. Simple repairs can usually be done easily but when repairs are large, matching colours can sometimes be very difficult. Again, new A.I. features are making this a bit easier.

- RECONSTRUCTING items, like tree trunks, posts, missing ears, or other body parts.

- No matter how I try, I can’t put a smile on great grand-dad’s face. Then again there are photoshop actions that can actually do that.

HOW TO SCAN.

- Do NOT just take a photo on your phone (or any other camera). Use a scanner.

- Be sure your scanner can save your image to a .jpg or .jpeg. (Not a Tiff, Bitmap or PDF). Usually this is not a problem.

- Set the Colour Mode to Colour, even if it is not a colour image. Don’t use the Black & White OR Greyscale function. Even if you are using a B&W Copier/Scanner, it can usually scan a jpeg in colour.

- The Resolution (or DPI) should be set at at 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch). You could go as high at 600 but the size of the file will be about four times larger (hard to email) and the quality will not be that different, if at all. So stay with 300.

- Please rename you file with your last name and maybe a number, especially if you are sending more than one file. (Example: McCarthy 1.jpg, McCarthy 2. jpg) Once complete, please send me the files either by WeTransfer of Dropbox. If you wish to send by any other method, please let me know. If you live near by, you can drop a thumb drive off at my house. OYou can also arrange to come by my house with the photo and we can scan it here.
